A blooming cactus sets the tone for this raw, glamorous take on vanilla's dark side.
Fresh and clear like moonlit desert air. Velvety and sensual like the midnight sky. CIERGE DE LUNE is inspired by the scent of the mysterious, night-blooming cereus cactus, also known as the queen of the night.
The French call it cereus moonlight, “moon altar candle,” a literal translation of the Latin Selenicereus grandiflorus. Because its spectacular flower opens only after sunset and fades at sunrise, Marie Antoinette is said to have summoned botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté at midnight to capture the poignant and fleeting beauty of New World cactus species. Today, the co-founder of AEDES DE VENUSTAS Karl Bradl and perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin capture the sweet scent of this elusive and evocative muse.
CIERGE DE LUNE spans an exciting spectrum, from crystalline high notes to a deep, nocturnal buzz of spicy vanilla intertwined with wisps of incense. For his first collaboration with AEDES DE VENUSTAS In 2016, Pellegrin drew from a rich portfolio. "Our Madagascar vanilla absolute is the most faithful to the natural ingredient," he explains. Woodier and more ambery than its Tahitian counterpart, with a tawny leathery nuance, this vanilla forms the heart of the composition, revealing a darker side. An airy whiff of hedione transforms the delicious pod into a cactus flower, its pristine petals plumped up by ylang-ylang.
To add vibrancy and brightness, sparkling pink pepper casts moonlight reflections into the velvety blend, while black pepper creates an intriguing, incense-like mineral thread, hinting at the olfactory theme of AEDES DE VENUSTAS, up to the resinous and smoky notes of dark chocolate. Then, in a final metamorphosis, the musky ambrox, underscored by a soft suede accord, transforms the nighttime bloom into a dark second skin.
