“Bal d'Afrique is one of my first perfumes. When it was first formulated, I was obsessed with the idea of translating memories into a perfume and, at the same time, including an imaginary component. My father lived and traveled in Africa for about 10-15 years. I had read his diaries, discovering how he traveled on merchant ships, meeting all kinds of people… So, I imagined arriving in Africa through someone else's words. Bal d'Afrique reflects all of this: it is an imaginary journey, as well as a total celebration of my vision of African culture and its influence.” Centered on beauty and fantasy, Bal d'Afrique is Ben Gorham's “love letter” to Africa, encapsulating and celebrating Africa's impact and influence over time and, in particular, how its myriad cultures have shaped dance, art, and music—the idea of an imaginary event.
