Something that nourishes and then grows. “I set out to create a sense of emotional well-being through a fragrance with a simple structure,” says perfumer Frank Voelkl. “The use of natural root extracts like ginger and iris reconnect us to the earth, making us feel grounded and centered.” But rather than identifying with a single note or fragrance category, 16A ORCHARD STREET presents itself as a mystery. “You don't know how to immediately define it, and that makes it interesting,” says Gerstner. “It's elusive. That's also the essence of the Lower East Side. It teaches you to think—and live—outside the box.”

Earthy materials become airy in Voelkl's hands. Ginger raises questions, leading you astray. Iris brings you back on track as it reveals its cool yet delicate quality. Quince and lily of the valley amplify the root extracts. Dry cedarwood and cashmere-like tonka bean create a dry, spicy roundness for the more fleeting notes of bergamot, lemon, cardamom, and jasmine.
